Reporting connector
Ask Claude about your Lineman spend
The Reporting connector lets anyone on your team ask Claude about your Lineman account in plain English, straight from Claude Desktop or Claude Code. You connect it once, then you just ask questions and Claude fetches the answer. You do not need to be technical.
It is built for the people who care about the numbers: finance and owners tracking the bill, managers watching where spend goes, and developers checking their own usage. It is read-first and scoped to your own account. This is a separate connector from the Lineman product plugin that compresses your files in Claude Code; the Reporting connector only reports on your usage and (for administrators) helps you set budgets and cost centres.
Who can see what
What the connector shows follows the same roles as the Lineman dashboard, so nobody sees more through Claude than they would signed in to the site.
- MemberSees their own usage and savings, and asks read-only questions about it.
- AuditorRead-only across the whole company: every project, person, and cost centre, but no changes.
- AdministratorEverything above, plus the setup actions: budgets and alerts, cost centres, authorised repositories, working hours, and resolving spend alerts.
Connect in Claude Desktop (recommended for most people)
- Open Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings (your name or the gear icon), then open the Connectors section.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Give it a name, for example Lineman Reporting, and paste this address into the URL box:
https://reporting-mcp.lineman.io/mcp - Claude will ask for an OAuth Client ID (automatic registration is not available). Paste this Client ID and leave any client secret box blank:
9b7c8e5b-06e1-40de-ad3a-e83f9d4345fd - Click Add. A browser window opens asking you to sign in to Lineman (see Signing in below).
- When the browser says you are connected, return to Claude Desktop. You should see Lineman Reporting listed as connected, and you are ready to ask questions.
Connect in Claude Code
If you use Claude Code, install it from the Lineman marketplace:
claude plugin marketplace add https://lineman.io/marketplace.jsonclaude plugin install lineman-reporting@linemanOr add the remote connector directly, without the marketplace:
claude mcp add --transport http lineman-reporting https://reporting-mcp.lineman.io/mcpThe first time you use it, Claude Code opens your browser to sign you in and approve access. After that the tools are available in your session. Check it is connected with claude mcp list.
What you can ask
Ask in plain language and follow up naturally. A few starting points, grouped by what people usually want to know:
Finance and owners
- “What's our plan, and how much of this month's allowance have we used?”
- “Show me our spend and savings trend over the last three months.”
- “How much did Lineman save us last month in tokens and in dollars?”
- “Break down last month's spend by cost centre.”
Managers and team leads
- “Which repos or projects used Lineman the most this week?”
- “Who are our heaviest Lineman users this month?”
- “How does this month compare with last month?”
Developers
- “How many Lineman calls did I make yesterday, and what did they cost?”
- “What's my own usage this week?”
Administrators (setting things up)
- “Set our monthly budget to $2,000 and alert me at 80%.”
- “Create a cost centre for the payments team.”
- “Authorise this repository for Lineman.”
- “Set our working hours so off-hours spend stands out.”
- “Which spend alerts are open, and who triggered them?”
Signing in
The first time you connect, a browser window opens and asks you to sign in to Lineman with your normal account and approve access. That is what lets Claude read your account's numbers and nobody else's. You only do this once per app; after that Claude stays connected until you remove it.
If something doesn't work
- The connector won't sign in, or the login didn't finishRemove the connector and add it again. That re-opens the sign-in window; complete it there and approve access.
- “You need administrator access”Setting budgets, cost centres, and authorised repositories is limited to administrators. Ask an administrator to make the change, or ask a read-only question about your spend instead.
- “Invalid client_id” or “client not found”The Client ID and the connector address must be from the same environment. Use the Client ID and address shown together on this page, and do not mix them with values from a different environment.
- Empty results for a periodEither there was no recorded activity in that period, or you signed in with an account that doesn't have the data. Make sure you used the same Lineman account you use for the dashboard, and try a wider date range.
Still stuck? Email support@lineman.io and mention you are setting up the Reporting connector.
