Cost Explorer tells you what happened. Alerts tell you while it is still happening. Set what normal looks like for your team, and Lineman raises the exceptions instead of making you go looking.
Turning alerting on
One switch turns the whole system on or off. With it off nothing is evaluated and nothing is raised, whatever else is configured. Leave it off while you are still deciding what your numbers should be: alerts that fire before you have set a sensible budget teach people to ignore them.
What Lineman will tell you about
Eight things can raise an alert, in four families.
- Budgets. Spend passed a daily, weekly or monthly limit you set, for the company or for one person.
- Spikes. A short window cost far more than your own baseline, whether or not a budget was crossed.
- Unauthorised repositories. Spend appeared in a repository nobody said your team would be working in.
- Out of hours. Spend happened outside the working hours you defined.
What to do with one
An alert is active until somebody deals with it. You can dismiss it once it has been handled, or mark it a false positive when it was not really a problem, which is the signal that your thresholds need adjusting rather than your team.
Nothing is ever deleted. Dismissed and false-positive alerts stay filterable, so you can look back at what was raised and how it was judged.
Who can change this
Administrators configure alerting and resolve alerts. Everyone else sees what applies to them.
